Early Years
Individuals with Down’s syndrome will show varying signs of developmental delay. Therefore, individuals in the early years will show significant characteristics of being developmentally delayed compared to their peers. These signs will include reduced attentions spans, difficulty processing input from more then one sense at a time, they will be easily distracted and will often move from one activity to another very quickly.
Students may have delayed speech, hearing impairments and delayed motor functions that may affect the way that they interact with others and engage in activities.
Students in the early years do respond well to structure and routine. Individuals with Down syndrome love to learn and this genuine curiosity and desire to learn should be taken advantage of by providing interesting, structured and well-planned routine.
